Avignon, City of the Popes

Avignon, City of the Popes

Situated on the banks of the Rhône, on the borders of the Gard and Vaucluse departments, Avignon is heir to a singular history: the capital of Christendom for over 120 years, it saw nine popes succeed one another between 1305 and 1429, and was only annexed to the kingdom of France at the time of the French Revolution.

Discover the legacy of this flourishing era as you wend your way through the winding streets of the historic centre, which has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1995: the Popes' Palace and the famous Pont d'Avignon, as well as private mansions, churches, convents and 150 statues of the Virgin Mary adorning the facades.

In terms of culture, the city is extremely dynamic, with the famous Avignon Festival in summer, as well as theatres, museums and art galleries.

Finally, in Avignon, each district forms a small village in the heart of the city. Head to the city of the Popes to savour the dolce vita of Provence, whatever the season!
