Avignon Festival

Avignon Festival

Launched in 1947, this illustrious festival of contemporary theatre and live performance aimed to create a truly popular theatre and to present contemporary French and foreign creation in theatre and dance, and more broadly in the performing arts. Performances are given in small chapels or, for the most important ones, in the legendary main courtyard of the Palais des Papes.
Over 1,700 shows, 27,400 curtain raisers and 241 venues are staged during the festival every July.
