Museo marítimo y del Presidio

The museum is housed in the former penal colony of Ushuaia (El Presidio Militar), built in 1902. Most of the convicts were political prisoners, including the Ukrainian anarchist Simón Radowitzky, who was imprisoned at the age of 18 after killing the director of police in Buenos Aires, The story is told by Bruce Chatwin in In Patagonia.

Closed in 1947, this penal colony became an important military base to establish Argentina's presence in the region.
